Saga-Sofia Santala's interdisciplinary doctoral research is positioned in the intersection of sustainable mobility transitions, mobility practices, and design for behaviour change. Her research explores the value of a social community approach in designing transitions towards more sustainable mobility practices. Through constructive design research in citizens' everyday lives, Saga's thesis demonstrates ways in which social communities shape (un)sustainable mobility practices and draws implications for socially informed mobility intervention design. Furthermore, she develops research methods for studying the situational mobility practices from a social community perspective. Her thesis is based on work conducted at KONE Corporation, where she has led community engagement work in the EU Horizon 2020 funded SPARCS project in 2020-2024.
She holds an MA in collaborative and industrial design (2019) and a BA in industrial design (2016) from Aalto University. Through her exchange studies at The Oslo School of Architecture and Design, she has studied systems-oriented design and design management.
