Marjut KAUPPINEN is the Public Lighting Manager of City of Helsinki. Marjut has been gathering knowledge and experience in the field of urban lighting in various roles: as city official, consultant, teacher and architect. Her objective is to develop harmonious, sustainable and safe nighttime cityscape in Helsinki with clear views to the starry skies. Marjut’s talk will describe future themes of the Helsinki lighting masterplan 2.0: light sensitive areas, wish for darkness and the need for safety and recognizable urban spaces.

Henrika PIHLAJANIEMI is an Associate Professor of Sustainable Architecture at the University of Oulu, specializing in lighting research and education. She currently leads a Europe-wide consortium developing design strategies that enable sustainable, aesthetic, and socially inclusive dark-time experiences at cultural heritage sites. Her talk will guide you through the Art of Darkness and discuss the values of well-considered darkness in developing and enhancing urban and cultural heritage contexts in a sustainable way. 

Moderator:

Gloria LAUTERBACH is an artistic researcher at the Department of Design at Aalto University. She looks at darkness as an urban restoration force and how darkness can help raise awareness of the needs of nature and wildlife. Gloria will moderate the discussion.
